Cooling is so heavily dependent on the cooling layout in the laptop; most will run with few problems, but you'll find some models are notoriously hot under load. Something that is easy to clean (without dismantling most of the laptop) is always nice.

I have a Thinkpad X201 running thinkfan (for high CPU loads) and it's great. Also have a t61 which runs as cool as a cucumber.

If in the UK check out PC specialist: their 2 kg 15" ultranotes with integrated graphics are a good option to stay away from windoze tax or graphics card overeating issues. You get great value for money and can configure exactly what you want. It takes a mSATA ssd you can use for booting and then put in another drive for storage. Make sure that you untick the windows options ;-). I bought one of those with a matte ips 1980x1080 screen - which is a joy to use - over two years ago and am still very happy with it.

I use PHC to fix that problem.

Check your fan. It might have some dust bunnies accumulated in it. Because I live in a desert, I have to clean mine out once a year.

I agree with the preference for AMD and Linux.

I always had good "luck" with either "off lease" pc's from TigerDirect.com (also great site/store for parts) and Gateway. Current laptop is an 8 year old Gateway, current desktop is a 5 year old off lease HP Compaq 6005 Pro AMD-Athlon II dual core.

Here is a list of TigerDirects off lease laptops: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...lease%20laptop

The heating problems on the Dell d620 and d630 was the nvidia gpu the one with intel gpu never had a heating problem. The two e6400's with dual core that I have has never had a heating problem of any type.
The e6400 run slackware with no problem at all. You should be able to get the e6430 quad i5 for about
the $150 which is much faster.
