Recommendation for a lightweight and eyeCandy Desktop Manager

Hi everyone..

Currently I am running the XFCE and find it not so nimble.. I did some info search on the web..using Google ,of course..haha. A few which I would consider, like LXDE , fluxbox and openbox..

Which one of them is easy to configure to make it pleasing to our eyes?

Thanks.. =)

LXDE is a full desktop environment, Fluxbox and Openbox are ONLY window managers.

IMO, fluxbox and openbox are similar enough that there really isn't any difference, fluxbox is IMO slightly more attractive out of the box.

LXDE, being a full desktop, has quite a bit more features by default.

I personally think all 3 are easy to configure to make them look nice. My personal preference strictly between those 3 would probably be LXDE, I'm a fan of fully featured desktops since my machines aren't lacking cpu power or ram. But YMMV.

Thanks Tim for your feedback.. then I might as well go for LXDE and see how it goes.

Personally, if I was going for eye candy I would look no further than enlightenment.

Had experienced with Enlightenment before.. agreed on the eye candy part.. however, it had crashed my previous distro...it was quite a while back and I couldn't remember which distro it was..

Though i couldn't really tell whether the crash was due to the distro itself or the Enlightenment.

No harm to give it a try again..

It depends on how much you want to customize. If you feel changing wallpaper, icons and themes is enough using pre-made arts/themes, I believe all DE/WM in your list can be made eye-candy easy enough.

If you want to create/modify your own theme, I think Openbox/Fluxbox is a good start. You still have to deal with GTK/QT themes, but at least the Window Manager-theme is a bit easier to customize giving you a lot of easy configurations to gain a nice eye-candy desktop fitted for your eyes.

There's also lumina. It's currently a 1.0.0 release so not completely polished yet, but it can be made to look pretty nice without too much effort, and it's lightweight. I believe it uses fluxbox as the window manager.

OpenBox+Tint2 is a popular and good combination. It's also the one I like.

You should also check out this reddit for ideas:

I second Enlightenment as good for eye candy, but you can do marvelous things with Fluxbox.

This is Fluxbox on Slackware --Current with Terminator and QMMP:

For eye candy, check out compton, which is a compositor that runs alongside WMs like openbox. It will give you alpha transparency and blur, not only on programs that support it, but also some other elements like menus and dialogs:

What is it you don't like about Xfce? With the right themes I think it looks great.
