This has got to be a simple one for one of the Slackware gurus out there :-)
How do I get real audio to play under Slackware?
As far as I can see I have two options:
1. Install Realplayer/Helix
3. Install the Real codecs and use MPlayer
I can't get Realplayer/Helix to work. When I download the installer files from Real they won't execute, even when I change permissions as suggested.
Mplayer seems a bit overly complicated but I've got it installed and the codecs extracted to the right place (I think) but it won't play the .RAM files on the BBC Radio web site.
Is there a simple answer to this problem?
(I'm using KDE if there is a KDE app that'll do the trick)
I think I tried this last night but couldn't execute the installer file. I believe I changed the properties of the file correctly, but when I ran it I got something like
Try this ------> Once you've successfully completed the download, you will be ready to install the RealONE Player. To do this, you must make the installer executable and then run it:
* Example: chmod u+x rp8_linux20_libc6_i386_cs2.bin
./rp8_linux20_libc6_i386_cs2.bin . I think that'll help u??
Jus executed it in the command line: Terminal Then u'll be Good.
Sorry to waste your time guys, I was obviously overtired.
The reason the installer wasn't working was that I had downloaded the Linux/Alpha version by mistake (the top option when downloading from Real!) Realplayer now loads...but I've got a new issue:
"cannot open audio device. Another application may be using it"
but I haven't started looking into this one yet.
Thanks for your help, and again apolgies for wasting your time.
No problem, actually I sort of figured you had downloaded the wrong file.
Do you have any other sound at all. Have you run alsaconf, then alsamixer and unmute it, then alsactl store.
No problem, Had the same problems 5 months thuoght i jus join a forum and give out sum tips, hints or whateva help ive come across!
P.S. fergot yea u can run that as root, i did it as normal user, it jus sits in mah /home directory. think both ways werk good. but too each his own!!.
This prolley why i dont post in forums alway fergot sumthang. :P
LONG LIVE SLACKWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I use alsa without a problem. There seems to be an ongoing problem with alsa. the 2.6 kernel. It doesn't effect everyone. But several people that know what they are doing can get alsa working on one of their boxes but not on the other.
