Re:Simple smp question

Hi guys, just a couple of quick questions, i have scoured the forums for answers, and I found some answers but have a couple of questions left over

I have a triple boot smp system with windows XP, redhat 9 and slackware 10 RC1, and I'm booting with grub from my redhat 9 install, the slackware section looks like this:

title Slackware Linux 9.1 (2.4.22)
root (hd0,2)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz ro root=/dev/hda3

so there is no link to a specific kernel, just the default one in /boot so do I delete anything in the boot folder or just clarify more specifically what to boot if I add another section for the smp kernel?

Also when slack is installed there are no pre compiled smp kernels on the disc, so once I have compiled successfully do I just copy the bzImage onto a floppy for future installations, or are other files needed aswell, and could I possible use one from the redhat disc, just curious if that would work.

someone posted this link which was pretty helpful: http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/SMP-HOWTO

and in the newbie compiling thread
it was posted that I could use an smp config file(from another installation) even if it was from an earlier kernel which is what I'm gonna try, I think thats all I was curious about.

Thanks for your time

MunCH

err OK I followed these instructions from the newbie kernel compiling thread:

make menuconfig (make your changes here...when done, save your new configuration)
make dep (sets all the kernel dependencies)
make clean (removes un-needed files)
make bzImage (builds the kernel)
make
make install (installs, moves and renames all the needed files and updates lilo)
make modules (builds all the kernel modules)
make modules_install (installs the modules)

I got an error @ make install, because I dont have lilo installed, but there doesnt appear to be any new files in /boot? did I do something wrong perhaps? I used the config-2.4.20-8smp from my redhat installation.

Now I'm stumped

Cheers

You can avoid make install step, and do the following.
Copy /usr/src/linux-2.X.X/arch/i386/boot/bzImage to /boot/vmlinuz-2.X.X (that's the kernel, change i386 if you're in another architecture) and then copy /usr/src/linux-2.X.X/System.map to /boot/System.map-2.X.X
There should be to symlinks in /boot called vmlinuz and System.map, make them point to your new kernel. That basically what make install does, it also updates lilo but you use grub

Also, try to add another entry to grub in other to also be able to boot the older kernel you have in case the newer doesn't work.

OK, this is probably stupid, but skippimg the make install step means I have to manually remame bzImage and system.map or do I make a folder in /boot for my smp kernel, copy system.map and bzimage to the folder then middle mouse drag and select link to the folder? and what happens to the make modules and make modules_install if the bzImage is already made, because all I did was copy the sorce folder from the bare-source image, copy my smp config file in there to do the kernel compile or am I on the wrong track?

Cheers
