rar/unrar for Slackware?

I've googled and search the forums, but wanted to find an aswer that pertained to Slackware.

D/L a file and it is in .rar format.

What type of software is needed to unrar this file?

I've done something like this on my Knoppix box, but damn it, need to take better notes, cause I can't remember (grad school is really a mental workout).

thanks again...

How about "unrar"? There are various versions around, I happen to use one from http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm . I think this is old-style shareware, so if you feel guilt about it and have no money, you might (freshmeat?) find another version.

On edit: Oh yes, this is on a slackware machine. I just built it and installed it in /usr/local....

Looks like rarlab is the only game in town then...

rarlab

What are people using on the Slackware box?

Is there anything that comes with the default install?

Yeah I'm using Rarlab unrar. I just install the package and Ark (KDE archiver) can open rar files. I don't think there's any rar utility that comes with Slackware.

The one I got off LinuxPackages works great as well. Integrates with Ark and File Roller seamlessly....

Actually, the one I'm using is version 3.4.0...... Can't say how the newer one on LinuxPackages works. The older one can be found in my sig link if your at all interested.

you can also run winrar using wine to get the proper gui.
I use this when files are password protected as I havent sussed this out in command line.

Well, in the command line you can do
Code:
unrar x file.rar
and if it's password protected, the program will ask you for the password...

It seems like Gnome's File-Roller doesn't like passworded rar files: it knows that it is protected, but you can't input a password (the password field is grayed-out).

Why doesn't slackware include a rar utility in the first place?

Just an FYI unrar is free. Rar (to create rar archives) is shareware. I just downloaded unrar from rarlabs, put the binary in /usr/local/bin and i'm all set.

sh1ft, they don't include it because:

inside of any other software package without written permission
of the copyright owner.
And it isn't opensource, like everything else in Slackware.

Hey guys just a follow up.

There is a specific unrar package for Slackware on rarlabs.com.

You can download that and simply use "sudo installpkg *.tgz".

You can find a Slackware compatible package in the Salix repository,

http://download.salixos.org/

and at MicroLinux,

http://www.microlinux.fr/slackware/
