Unhappy Radeon 9250 on Slackware

Hi. Trying to install ATE Radeon 9250 on Slackware and when i run the aticonfig -initial it returns the message that configuration file not found and to copy and paste it to etc/X11. xorg.conf is in the etc/X11 directory already. I don't know what configuration file that aticonfig is looking for. If there is anyone who can help i would be grateful.

P.S. Sorry, i am new to this and may have posted this in the wrong thread.

Hi Scott, welcome to LQ!

Probably this would have been ideally posted in 'Hardware' or 'Slackware' but anyways..

What does the -initial switch do? Does that make it look for some file somewhere, like maybe a 'default' xorg.conf?
In my experience trying to help folks with ATI cards, it often becomes apparent that it would have been easier to get it working by hand, rather than letting aticonfig butcher the config file.

Have you tried searching LQ for the information you need? What is the problem at the moment with the card? You need to install the driver I guess?

Search for 'slackware fglrx xorg.conf' and similar terms, as well as read the docs for the video driver, if you have them, and also check the man page for xorg.conf.

The ATI driver for Slackware is a little more complicated to install than it let's on. Take a look at my link for details on how to install ATI on Slackware properly!

Perry, in that article you erroneously advise people to install the ati driver in the /extra directory of Slackware 12.0...

This is wrong. The Ati driver in /extra is not a requirement for every Ati card owner!

The README for the Ati driver in /extra is as follows:

If the ATI driver in the main tree doesn't work, then
try this one. You may have better luck.
People, please follow this advise from Pat Volkerding, and only install the driver from /extra if the default driver does not work for you.
As an example: I own two computers with an Ati card, and did not need this 'extra' driver at all.

Do not use fglrx. It no longer supports 9250. Use the driver that comes with slackware which works absolutely fine. Yes 3D too. I'm talking about the stock driver, and not the one in /extra either. The one in extra was a last minute update prior to release for people that might have trouble but it might have not been fully tested.

Slackware 12 or Slackware 11 ?

Xorg 7 works fine in 12 , but slack11 has a problem ... (just my experience )
