Questions about portals and GTK apps

Hello,

On KDE Plasma Wayland, running apps with GTK_USE_PORTAL=1 makes the fonts blocky and not antialiased (aliased?). This seems to be a known problem, and users of other distros have reported success by installing the GTK and/or the GNOME portal, but that doesn't seem to be the case in Slackware. I played around with the packages and found that:
  • Screen sharing requires xdg-desktop-portal-kde to be installed.
  • To make GTK apps use antialiased fonts one should install xdg-desktop-portal-gtk and uninstall xdg-desktop-portal-kde.

So I'm at a loss: is this a bug in the KDE portal, the GTK portal, or the upstream logic? It seems like with xdg-desktop-portal-kde installed, GTK_USE_PORTAL would prefer the KDE portal, which then doesn't send some kind of antialiased parameter, but shouldn't it fall back to the GTK portal in this case? What should I do to make the fonts antialiased while all the portals stay installed? Thanks in advance.

I read that and other related Arch Wiki pages, none of which has a solution to why the fonts stay choppy even when the GTK portal is installed.

I see the fonts look "chunky" when running programs with GTK_USE_PORTAL=1 as well, but that all goes back to normal fonts if I don't use GTK_USE_PORTAL=1, so I have to ask: What is it supposed to do? Why are you using it in the first place? What happens if you don't add that to your program's environment?

Also are you on -current or -15.0? I ask because xdg-desktop-portal and xdg-desktop-portal-kde versions are different in current vs 15.0. My slackware-current laptop is the only one that runs plasma on wayland reliably so I had to test there.

I'm not using it for anything, just curious why it's not working on Slackware, since I saw several related bug reports on various GTK apps. (and doesn't Flatpak use this environment variable too?) I'm on Slackware -current, patched monthly.
