ProFTPD and Client Issue

I'm posting this query in the Slackware forum because this is my natural home and one of the best sources of expertise on the net. If the moderator sees fit to move it, so be it.

I have a puzzling query regarding a ProFTPd installation on a SuSE 9.1 box.

The problem is that some users cannot access the server which although it allows them to connect will sit for ages before not displaying the directory listing. However other users can access the server without issue and at speed.

For example a Windows user can connect using their command line but not through a client such as FileZilla. I can connect my Slackware 10.2 box using gFTP, but not when I use my G4 and Interarchy. Yet a Mac user on Tiger using Transit (another Mac ftp client) connected successfully. I downloaded Transit and encountered the same problems, so it's not the client per se.

======Edit=======

Found the answer. Mac OSX 10.3's built in firewall doesn't let through FTP packets, even when you authorise the service.

Once that was found, it was determined that a copy of ZoneAlarm was performing the same "function" on the Windows box in question.

One problem i found with proftp was it wouldn't allow large (file>1GB) transfers to complete. Switched to vsftp and it allowed specific users to accomplish this.

Thanks for that additional info Ghost Runner. The files in question were large artwork files, several hundred MB but not approaching a gig.

Since advising the many clients which connect to my FTP server to configure their firewall to allow their FTP client through, to us binary mode with passive decactivated, they have all got in without problem.

It's just there are so many clients (people as well as programs) it makes it trickier to ensure they have all their settings just so.

Regards,

dkpw
