problems w/ display

hi,
this is what i did to get my fujitsu s6120 laptop to its current state:
- install xp
- install mdk 9.2 with lilo on mbr
- install slack 9.1 without bootloader (3 linux partitions: 1 for mdk, 1 for slack, and 1 swap)
- (as advised) boot to mdk, mount the slack partition, copy slack vmlinux (or something like that) to /boot, unmount the slack parition
- add slack to lilo.conf

ok, so now, xp and mdk are smooth. however, i have trouble with slack:
- boot to slack
- i see the command line (i'd like to start x at boot, but this is not an issue)
(the above steps are normal)

- startx
NOW: while x is starting, i see a garbled, weird colors, basically a messed up mdk background for a few seconds.

(back to normal)
- then kde (default) starts
- kde runs ok

- then i logout (back to the command line)
NOW: the screen is white text on black background, and i see horizontal lines that run across the white text. these lines seem to be moving up and down, 2.

perhaps 1 last bit of im4mation: during lilo, xp splash screen, mdk and slack terminal only (x is not running), not the entire screen is used.

to summarize: i have 2 problems: slack can see mdk background when starting x, and the horizontal lines across the screen.

i'd appriciate any help. thanks.

With the text console (were you are seeing horizontal lines)...are you using framebuffer console? I can't see how standard VGA console would be doing that.

As for seeing the Mandrake background for a second when you run startx...that's common if it's what I'm thinking it is. It's a page from your video memory that is displaying before X initializes it for it's own use (from my understanding).

Mine does the same thing...if I'm running XP and then reboot into Slack and issue startx then I'll see where XP desktop for an instant before startx initializes the display and my X comes up.
