problem with phpize - slack 9.1

I'm having problems with phpize on Slackware 9.1. I get this error when trying to run it to install MMcache:

/usr/local/bin/autoconf: line 153:
/__oline__/ { printf "%d:", NR + 1 }
{ print }
: No such file or directory
/usr/local/bin/autoheader: line 269: cmp: command not found
Configuring for:
PHP Api Version: 20020918
Zend Module Api No: 20020429
Zend Extension Api No: 20021010

I'm not sure what I need to do to rectify this as I've search all over for a solution.

I'm using a PHP 4.3.7 package with Apache 1.3.31 (?).
Autoconf 2.57
Automake 1.7.8
Libtool 1.4.3

I think those are all the affecting apps.
Thanks.

What commands are you doing to get the error?

Just the following per the install instructions:

export PHP_PREFIX="/usr"
$PHP_PREFIX/bin/phpize

Then after getting the above error output, running ./configure returns nothing.

I've downloaded turck-mmcache-2.4.6, and the package doesn't even contain a configure script.

Hmmm. Well, it should be there - and of course, it's mentioned in the instructions...

Yes, I've been having a poke at it when I get some free time but I'm rather busy ATM networking $50,000 printer/copiers.
