I have spent the better part of my day reading through the threads that relate to kernel upgrade/compiling, and for the most part, I believe I have learned alot. The old saying, "More I read, the more confused I get" does hold some weight.
I don't consider myself a NOOB, not really!
To the meat of the matter:
Often after compiling, it seems people have problems with what modules have/haven't been compiled into the kernel. I have a problem following this logic. Does there exist a config file somewhere that indicates what modules have been compiled into the existing kernel? This would be invaluable when upgrading to a new kernel. Wouldn't it?
Does there exist a "checklist" of what info specifically will be required to have on hand for a re-compile. As far as I can see, you have to get "fully involved in the process", and then possibly be asked for critical system values ......................... only to get blown out of the water, by not having it. How many have had to learn the hardway of kernel compile by NOT KNOWING what you are being asked to do/ or provide? I have fstab, lilo, and my laptop ............ supporting continuous contact with these forums ...............................
On the brink of making the move ...........
TIA
