I have spent the better part of my day reading through the threads that relate to kernel upgrade/compiling, and for the most part, I believe I have learned alot. The old saying, "More I read, the more confused I get" does hold some weight. I don't consider myself a NOOB, not really!

To the meat of the matter:

Often after compiling, it seems people have problems with what modules have/haven't been compiled into the kernel. I have a problem following this logic. Does there exist a config file somewhere that indicates what modules have been compiled into the existing kernel? This would be invaluable when upgrading to a new kernel. Wouldn't it?

Does there exist a "checklist" of what info specifically will be required to have on hand for a re-compile. As far as I can see, you have to get "fully involved in the process", and then possibly be asked for critical system values ......................... only to get blown out of the water, by not having it. How many have had to learn the hardway of kernel compile by NOT KNOWING what you are being asked to do/ or provide? I have fstab, lilo, and my laptop ............ supporting continuous contact with these forums ...............................

If you look in your linux source, you will find a '.config' file that has the kernel's configuration options listed.

You can copy this file into a new kernel's source and do a 'make oldconfig'. It will read in the existing '.config' file for the new kernel's options.

Thanks Matt, I will give it a try, didn't really see '.config' mentioned anywhere. I knew something like this had to exist, unless I ran into it, and it didn't "register"

Issue 'makeoldconfig' when exactly? In lieu of make config, in addition to make config? I think I plan on using xconfig, have heard good things about it, unless you have an opinion?

cp .config /path/to/new/kernel/source
cd /path/to/new/kernel/source

make oldconfig
make menuconfig
make bzImage && make modules && make modules_install

cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/bzImage-"kernel version"
cp System.map /boot/System.map-"kernel version"

pico /etc/lilo.conf

Add new listing for your new kernel (copy and paste existing listing, and change top line to point to your new kernel)

/sbin/lilo

reboot
