Hi
If it helps any ....
I managed to get an Alcatel 330 running under SuSE 8.2 for 12 months and it was fine.
It was a bit of a fiddle to get the code to compile and then use the microcode but it did work. This was with a 2.4.20 kernel.
And I did feel I was flying by the seat of my pants for pretty well all of the install. After I had it installed I found that it would not come up on startup or reboot but that I had to use the microoce everytime and then the pppd stuff.
SuSE got the modem further under control for me via their automatic updates, I think because I found a new driver or something under a /usr/lib directory that I know I hadn't installed. So maybe they evened things out a little bit. Anyhow, it started coming up automagically on startup and occasionally on reboot, which was nice.
As far as I recall, the driver has been included in 2.4.2x where x > 4 so there "should" be no need to install another driver.
I lost that install when it ksysooped on me. This was either due to a hardware fault (the box is 6 years old now) or the fact that I had put a KVM in the system.
I have recently ressurrected that box and have ubuntu under test. That seems to be running 2.6.8 and has an Alcatel speedtouch modem driver installed. I've heard/read there is some grief in the 2.6.x kernels with it and that the later 2.4.x (x>=24) are better.
However I remain slightly confused as to what I should do to get the modem running now.
Do I do the microcode thing or not? What parts of the instructions at
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.p...STALL?rev=HEAD
do I follow?
Or do I just not need to do any of those things at all?
I have agree with avatar about how much time can be spent on some problems..
My biggest bugbear with Linux is that sometimes I want to do X but find I have to work
thru a-z, 0-999 and then A-W to get there and then failing cos I get stuck at 42 or somewhere else in the line.
And it's not just the alcatel - there have been other similar issues in my experience of Linux.
