pppd: pty [ usb speedtocuh modem] *solved*

im trying to connect using a USB speedtouch 330.

i went to sourceforge and got the latest driver, and ran it, put the ISP details which the script asks for.

i then ran speedtouch-start to try and connect, but an error message comes up:-

pppd : pty option precludes specifying device name

i first thought the details were wrong and checked that. do i have set anything else up to connect? or am i missing a module?

thanks as always!

Hi edM

Are you using the default Slack kernel (bare.i or something like that)?
I've been using a Speedtouch USB modem for a while on Slack (default kernel) and several other distros and I've never seen that message before

The drivers I've found to be the best are from here: http://speedtouchconf.sourceforge.net/

Its actually the same driver but a different script to configue it all. You might want to give that one a go and see if you have the same error.

HINT: Give up now! I kid you not....I had this modem and its not worth the pain. I just asked my ISP for a different ethernet brand. They gave me one with both usb/eth connections and it worked like a charm.

I agree!

But, I also agree that these modems are a lot more of a pain in the ass than a proper router.

Getting a router will be better in the long run but its definitely possible to get these USB modems going under Linux (I'm using one now). I remember once when I recompiled the kernel I got some errors and had to try again but I can't tell you exactly which kernel options we need.

Good luck (I wish I could afford a decent router )

yeah that second script is definatly better at least it tells you errors, which gives you something to work from! i found some random usb modem FAQ, that listed some of modules which were missing. some fiddling around with different firmware, and after about 5 recompiles i got it to work. it still doesnt connect from boot up but im not really fussed about that.

if you just have to type some commands to start it,
can't you put them in the "rc.local " ?

Glad to hear you got it going, thats the hacker spirit

I think that script can only set it up to run at boot if you use a distro with with SysV boot scripts, but Slack uses BSD style scripts. I never got mine to run at boot either but I don't care too much. egag is probably right about putting something into rc.local.

Aww bite me..when I loose a month of my own relaxing time to modem setup I know it HAS to be the modems fault and not mine. In the end getting another modem from my ISP for free which just used roaring penguin was much more migrane pleasing

I almost gave up on linux due to that thing.....thats how bad it was on mine. People had me convinced it was sympatico's fault but it was definately that damned Stingray shaped monster!

Hi

If it helps any ....

I managed to get an Alcatel 330 running under SuSE 8.2 for 12 months and it was fine.

It was a bit of a fiddle to get the code to compile and then use the microcode but it did work. This was with a 2.4.20 kernel.
And I did feel I was flying by the seat of my pants for pretty well all of the install. After I had it installed I found that it would not come up on startup or reboot but that I had to use the microoce everytime and then the pppd stuff.

SuSE got the modem further under control for me via their automatic updates, I think because I found a new driver or something under a /usr/lib directory that I know I hadn't installed. So maybe they evened things out a little bit. Anyhow, it started coming up automagically on startup and occasionally on reboot, which was nice.

As far as I recall, the driver has been included in 2.4.2x where x > 4 so there "should" be no need to install another driver.

I lost that install when it ksysooped on me. This was either due to a hardware fault (the box is 6 years old now) or the fact that I had put a KVM in the system.

I have recently ressurrected that box and have ubuntu under test. That seems to be running 2.6.8 and has an Alcatel speedtouch modem driver installed. I've heard/read there is some grief in the 2.6.x kernels with it and that the later 2.4.x (x>=24) are better.

However I remain slightly confused as to what I should do to get the modem running now.

Do I do the microcode thing or not? What parts of the instructions at

http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.p...STALL?rev=HEAD

do I follow?

Or do I just not need to do any of those things at all?

I have agree with avatar about how much time can be spent on some problems..

My biggest bugbear with Linux is that sometimes I want to do X but find I have to work
thru a-z, 0-999 and then A-W to get there and then failing cos I get stuck at 42 or somewhere else in the line.
And it's not just the alcatel - there have been other similar issues in my experience of Linux.

Regards

LesleyB
