Porblems installing Slackware 8.0 on a Thinkpad T23

Hi all,

I am trying to install Slackware Linux on a Thinkpad T23 System, but I am having a lot of problems. the default scsi.s kernel just hangs during bootup but that is no problem, so I used the bare245.i kernel to boot the Slack CD; anyway that is the kernel I need, and tryed with and without the floppy=thinkpad parameter. This part of the installation works ok.

After setting up the partitions, and selecting the CD as my installation medium the problems begin. As soon as it tries to install the a1 packages, I get three message:

1) Looking through index file (diska1) missing package find.tgz
2) Looking through index file (diska1) missing package nlio.tgz
3) Looking through index file (diska1) Extra package lilo.tgz

I did an Alt + F2 to get another virtual console, and did a dmesg and this is the error that I find:

ISO 9660 Extensions: RRIP_1991A
ISO 9660 Extensions: RRIP_1991A

File unit size != 0 for ISO file (81570) ---> I am thinking this is the error message.

I am sure that the DVD Drive is not faulty, because I used this exact same drive on another computer, and installed Slackware8.0 successfully with it. I even tryed using the CD-RW, and I got the same errors.

I just click OK to skip the messages. But once it tries to install any packages I get the following error:

Install error:

gzip: stdin: invalid compressed data--format violated
tar: Child returned status 1
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors.

I tried it with menu, full, and expert mode. In expert mode if I choose to Exit when it prompts me to install a package, I get the following error:

chmod : /mnt/tmp : No such file or directory

/usr/lib/setup/setup : cannot create /mnt/etc/fstab directory nonexistent
/usr/lib/setup/setup : cannot create /mnt/etc/fstab directory nonexistent
/usr/lib/setup/setup : cannot create /mnt/etc/fstab directory nonexistent
/usr/lib/setup/setup : cannot create /mnt/etc/fstab directory nonexistent

I don't think it has to do with the Slack Cd that I burned, because I installed it on a Thinpad A20m, and it installed without any problems.

I hear that it is easier to install Debian or Redhat on the T23, but I
really want to install Slackware.

System Specs:

Thinkpad T23 1.13 Ghz
128 MB RAM
48 GB HD partitioned to:

hda1 ~10 GB --> Win2k
hda2 ~312 MB --> Swap
hda3 ~10 GB --> Linux Native
hda4 ~25 GB --> Fat32 partition

DVD-ROM + CD-RW

So any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

Thanks Aussie, but I searched through that site before posting here, and they only have pages on installing Debian + Redhat, but I figured out how to install Slack..

It turns out that even though the DVDRom worked fine with the Thinkpad A20m, there was a problem with the T23. I just copied all the packages to the HD, and installed them from there.

Wonder why I didn't think of that from before.

Everything is fine now.
THanks for the help.
