My son has gone over to PGP on his windows gear & Gmail. Hardly the most Security conscious system, but I have to cope
On Slackware (14.1), what should I read, and install? Am I correct in thinking GPG is a better option? I am currently using domains under mail.com for email. Has anyone had any experience interfacing with them?
On Linux we have gpg indeed.
I use Thunderbird for reading emails, both on Windows and on Linux. I installed the "enigmail" plugin (available both for Windows and Linux btw) which calls gpg to transparently en- and decrypt emails.
There's also several GUI based GPG key management programs in Slackware if you need one. Kleopatra comes to mind.
I also use gpg with alpine. For en/decrypting emails in (al)pine you need a script called "pinepg".
About the mail.com service, I can not give you any good advice.

For graphical based GPG there's kgpg - very easy to use and sits in the panel if you wish it. But even if you don't want to use a graphical program for GPG, the command-line is actually relatively easy.
I use Claws mail with GPG and it works superbly.
I also can't help with the mail.comn thing, sorry.
Thank you.
I have a suspicious of the utility of any programming beginning with ' k' or 'g' because they require KDE or GNOME.Both wrestle with the system for control, can have separate configs, libs, etc. KDE in particular is slow t start.
I use XFCE, offered by Slackware as a 'Low Cholesterol Window Manager.'
I note both of your recommendations for GPG. For me, console is fine. Mail.com is webmail, and they haven't catered for encryption AFAICT. I intend to have a go, but was going to draw on experience, if there was any.

Here is a possible issue: in order to use Mozilla Thunderbird or any other email client with GPG, you will need to have a direct access to the mail.com servers, using the IMAPS and SMTPS protocols.
Very Interesting. Mail.com is losing favour fast. They offer me premium, but if I opt for it, they tell me it's not available in my country (Ireland).
I tried to take a screenshot of mail.com's listing. Its not allowed by the app. I see his messages in plain text, Underneath each of them in a bold font is:
Quote:
+++ Encrypted message +++
Yet I see only the plain text. It looks as if it has implemented decryption but that I send plain text.
