thanks LinFreak!

Update: mounting my DVD drive (hdc) and my cdwriter (hdd) seem to be no problem now. This issue only seems to be happening on my NTFS hard drive, hdb1

before i mount the filesystem to the directory its permissions are drwxr-xr-x, and i can cd to it no problem. as soon as i mount it using my user it changes to dr-x------ and I can no longer cd to it. Here is my fstab:

/dev/hda3 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/hda2 / reiserfs defaults 1 1
/dev/hdb1 /mnt/hdb1 ntfs noauto,user,ro 0 0
/dev/hdc /mnt/dvd iso9660 noauto,user,ro 0 0
/dev/hdd /mnt/cdwriter iso9660 noauto,user,ro 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,user 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0

Any Ideas?

Also tried "users" instead, and took out "ro".. same behavior.

Thanks again!

Murray

hmm, I have no ntfs partitions to play with....
try using the option "auto" instead of "ntfs" for the filesystem type [hdb1] and see what happens. Also try "rw" instead of "ro" as an option. I have had this problem with cdroms but not hard disk partitions.

anyone else have any ideas?

The 2.4 kernel allows read only to ntfs partitions. You can recompile the kernel, there is write support available but it is experimental and may wreck your ntfs partition (f*ck up windows).

Im not trying to write.. i only need read access to the partition. again, works fine for root, and i can mount it as any user, but only root can browse it.
