pcHDTV firmware upload fails on Slackware 12.2, worked on 12.1

In upgrading (clean install) from 12.1 to 12.2, I find that the upload of firmware into my pcHDTV card no longer works. The firmware files are present in /lib/firmware, just as they were under 12.1, but dmesg shows that the firmware upload is repeatedly failing. The message (and I apologize that I'm not near the machine at present) indicates something to the effect either that the file is missing or that the upload is timing out. The file is definitely not missing, so I'm guessing timeout.

The only thing I can see that I can make sense of is that, during boot, I get kernel messages showing that i2c appears to be exporting duplicate symbols.

I'm guessing (for lack of more expertise) that this is something different in the way the kernel is compiled, but I can't figure out what.

Any thoughts?

Further info... Back at the machine in question, I just loaded Slackware 13.0 on the same machine on a spare partition, and it also fails. Here is what I see in dmesg (the text below appears to repeat for each attempt at loading the firmware):
