Hi,
I was looking for a p2p client for my slackbox, something similar to soulseek and I came across the Nicotine p2p client...however following the instructions I must download
and install some 'pygtk' (toolkit?) which helps create applications for gnome....and since I don't have gnome on my slackbox 10.2 I thought maybe this p2p client only works in gnome...so y bother! Is this true? Can someone give me some hint with that p2p client or even point me to another client which works fine with slackware and xfce-windows....!?
You shouldn't need a full gnome install, just the gtk+ toolkit (which slack DOES have, hence the reason why you can still run progs like gftp and gimp, which both use GTK). pygtk is for writing GTK apps in the python language. Search for it on http://www.linuxpackages.net and install it, then give the app a shot.
I know quite a few people are enjoying great success with mldonkey. It's a daemon that runs continously in the background (if you want it to) and there's a nice KDE tool (Kmldonkey) to control it. It connects to most networks, and is fairly secure..
The slackware packages dont work but as long as you build all plugins from source then install apollon, you will be fine. Also, I have not had much luck using the all-in-one installer but source works perfectly.
Apollon is just great. The only detail is that you have to install the engine (giFT and plugins) from source. But Apollon itself does install whitout problem using the all-in-one installer (you have to specify that you only want Apollon compiled; and not giFT nor the plugins).
The videos' integrity is not affected by previews, like in Kazaa. I definitely recommend Apollon.
I just checked their homepage and it doesn't look like it, but I remember using it before my W2K box crapped out and it was pretty good at finding very rare music.
