OO & MiniSlack

I have installed MiniSlack on an old laptop, with 300mhz, 64meg & 6meg hd.I am OK with the performance. If I install Open Office, and it is really slow, will it affect the machine even when Open OIffice is not running?

Sometimes I'm amazed by the questions asked here. Linux is not rocket science.
If you install OO on a Windows machine, will it slow down the computer if it's not running? Of course not! It will only eat disk space. Same on Linux.

You can't install OO if you have such a small hdd.

Actually, yes, it can slow down Windows. Many programs install services into Windows, or lines in the registry. As more things are added, Windows gets slower and slower, even when those programs are not running. Thats why a clean install usually brings a Windows machine back to life. Is it rocket science? No, but even something simple has to be learned.

Ok, I stand corrected. Let us renew that statement in: installed programs that are not running will not slow down the computer in case a decent OS has been installed.

If more dynamic link libraries are installed, it will slow down rebuilding of the dynamic link cache. Normally this is only done during the system start (though, it can be turned off if you know what you are doing).

Also true, but it doesn't really bother me when booting.

update on OO installation

OK,

I was able to install Open Office 2.0. I had enough HD space, CPU and memory. However, my computer is slower now. Not a problem, as this is more of a learning linux computer. I will probably start oiver with Slackware, custom install, selecting only the package I think I need.

Thanks for the advise.

Run ps aux or top to check if additional programs which appeared after OO installation are running in the background. If not, that's not an OO issue.

Thanks for the reply. I am going to start over on a slightly faster HP laptop and see what I get. I'll try to get that installation optimized, but right now, I don't mind breaking it, or reinstalling to see the differences.
