Only one program can use sound?

I'm using Slackware 13.0 and it seems that I can only have one sound application open at a time. For instance, if I have xmms open to play music but then stop it but keep the application open I can't use any other application that uses sound. I'm using the stock Slackware alsa utility. In Slackware 12.2 I didn't have this issue, but not sure if it is an option I had to enable or not. Hopefully, it is just a quick fix.

It is rather quite annoying to open up flash player in Firefox and then not be able to play music or watch a video w/sound in another application. Any ideas?

Never mind. Stupid me. I picked Alsa from within XMMS rather then the default OSS and now it works. Doh!
