Old machine, Slack9.0, keyboard does not work.

Hey folks,

I'm trying to install Slackware 9.0 on an old machine I have kicking around, a pentium 233 running on a chaintech 5agm2 motherboard.

The weird thing is that although the installation goes without a hitch, as soon as I reboot and it asks me to log in, the keyboard does not work. I've tried it with two different keyboards. The first one is a Microsoft KB-6923 keyboard (with a PS2 plug) and the other is one of those super-heavy (and old) IBM keyboards (with a large, 5-pin PS2-like plug). No luck with either of them.

Both keyboards worked perfectly during installation so I am quite confused.

Any ideas as to what this weirdness could be?

What keyboard layout if any did you choose during install? Did you try just the defaults, not selecting a specific keyboard, etc?

Yes, installation was done using the defaults.

a couple of thoughts that are probably not going to help..

Could it be that the keyboard is ok, but the system has hung?

Does ctrl-alt-del or Alt-F6 have any affect?

Is there some hardware that could be conflicting?

Maybe you could try reinstalling with a minimal setup and
conservative video settings to start with, and see if that helps.

Can you use a cdrom (or floppy) as a rescue disk to get into the system and check XF86Config etc? Apparently knoppix cdroms make excellent rescue systems.

If the system has seized up (which is a possibility), it isn't showing any signs other than the keyboard not functioning.

I tried and install with no X-Windows, no lilo, and booted from a Linux boot disk and I get the same problem. It seems to be only Slackware that causes this problem. I've tried installing 9.0, 9.1 with no success where as Debian Woody and FreeBSD 5.1 are fine.

I would much rather use Slackware though...
