Nvidia Driver Problems (7676)

Hello Guys.. I have some problems with Nvidia 7676 Module in Slack 10.2
I've compiled the nvidia module, and changed all necessary sections in xorg.conf.

The problem is:
When I turn my computer ON for the first time, when I log and type startx, my screen shows some strange things (some colored pixels around the black screen) and freeze the system. (When this problem happens, I'm not able to restart x server or even restart the computer using the Keyboard.. just the reset and power buttons can restart the computer)..
After the computer restart, I log again and type startx .. I don't know why, but in the second try, the module aways work.. The nvidia logo appears and X works fine..
This problem don't happens with nv modele.. just with nvidia module.
Another interesting thing: When I start my computer and log on windows before enter in Linux, when I restart the system and log on Linux, X server aways works..
Well..

This is a hardware problem with my nvidia card? (GeForce 2 MX 400 - 46mb) or a nvidia module problem ?
Please help-me..

and of course... sorry for my bad english language..

Try adding
Code:
Option "NoLogo"
to the "Device" section to see if the logo is causing the problem. Also if your monitor doesn't support EDID then probing for it may be causing the problem, so try adding
Code:
Option "IgnoreEDID"
as well.
Maybe on the second start it doesn't probe.

You could also see if there is anything informative in the log file for X, or post said file here.
/var/log/XFree86.?.log

It would be best to wait until after it freezes, then without restarting X getting this file. (you can copy it to your home directory if you need to get into xwindows to post it here.) It may even be helpful to post it to NVidia's forums

Also check /var/log/syslog, /var/log/messages, and dmesg for anything unusual.

I had problems with version 7676 similar to that, after a few hours everything would freeze except that I could move the mouse. The only way to fix it was to hard reboot. There was an error message in one of those files that said "NVRM Xid: 13" or similar so I went back to version 6629 and haven't had any problems.

btw, I've got a GeForce4 MX440 AGP 8x card, 64mb. I think it has something to do with the drivers. Check out this thread:

I haven't had much experience with the card you are having issues with, but mine did the same sort of thing, and I was able to fix it by installing the drivers with this command/argument.
Code:
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7676-pkg1.run --force-tls=classic

Hello again.. Thanks everyone for the help..

I've tried the ciotog suggestion and the problem continues (tomorrow I have some time and I'll will get the logs and try the rodm13 suggestion.. ) If I still having problems, I'll try to re-install the 6629 version like elyk said..
The new 7676 version was installed here because I didn't compile the older version (that I don't remember the version number) that I've used in the Slackware 9.1 and 10.0.
Well Thanks Again for the help guys..

I'll try to fix it and I'll bring more news soon.. !! :-)

See ya !!

(PS: again sorry for my bad english.. )

Hello Again..
I've used the Rodm13 solution
: sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7676-pkg1.run --force-tls=classic

Well.. Now I can start the Linux using the nvidia module everytime, but when I press CTRL + ALT + [Function keys] to change to console mode the problem appears.. That's strange, but the X doesn't freeze the machine.. Pressing the CTRL+ALT+F7 it returns to X mode again and everything works fine.. When I type on console Init 6 or 0, the problem appears, and the computer turns off or restart, but with these colored pixels around the screen..
Well.. This problem isn't annoying like before, but if possible I want to fix it..

Thanks for the help guys..
