no sound daemon

i have no sound on my notebook with slack 10.0.
checking around i point out that the sound daemon isn't active and the system suggest to run "esd".
i did it but the command hangs for ages and nothing comes out.
what to do?
thanks

Did you configured alsa?
If not, run alsaconf as root, then alsamixer and set the volume level and finally alsactl store .
