This could be conflicting framebuffer devices, in X do a lsmod and see if you have more than one xxxfb present.

this made no difference

my bad, i had to do that to Zenwalk, just before i got rid of it for Slack-current....i have this strange love/hate relationship with zenwalk....

lsmod shows no xxxfb device
just the following video while in x

output
i2c_core
button
agpgart
video
intel_agp
i2c_algo_bit
drm
drm_kms_helper
i915


thats all pertaining to video

Well, try to blacklist i915, it should not be there.

Hi,

You can try placing the 'vga=normal' in the global section of '/etc/lilo.conf'. Be sure to comment out any other 'vga=' option and run 'lilo' as root.

Your hardware may not support the 'vga=791'. You could step until the proper option or find out what your hardware does support.
