I have a Conexant HSF softmodem I had working perfectly under Red Hat 9.0 I have recently installed Slack 9.0 and went to download the drivers only to find I have to pay more money than my modem cost........... Is there nowhere I can get free drivers for my modem for Slack? I tried rpm2tgz on my Red Hat 9.0 driver but it doesnīt seem to work properly
Please help me... or do I have go go out and buy a real modem like everyone else who just gave up?
Well, there are free ones, they just run at an amazing 14.4k
15 dollars isn't that bad, get the 14.4k first to see if they work of course.
You might also be able to find a source RPM for the driver on your "rh" disc(s), in which you might have more luck with rpm2tgz. Currently, what's the route you are taking with your attempts?
Sorry being really frustrated I didnīt explain everything exactly right. I downloaded the drivers when they were free to get it to work in Red Hat 9. When I installed Slack I went back to get drivers but now they charge
The only other avenue I am trying at the moment is that I have another modem lying around a PCTEL PCT 789T-C the drivers do seem to free but I am having problems installing them... I will post more of an explaination asap (as I have to swap between XP and linux for internet)
Well that doesnīt really help me that you have them and I donīt... I need to know some way that I can get them! Or someway of getting around needing them.
if you have any ideas or find any sites that can help me you can email them to me here:
no, i was tryna tell him without trna tell him to get in contact wit me, so i could give it to him. cuz trading it i thought was agaisnt board rules, i dunno :P
so hint hint, you should pm me so we can talk about linux stuff :P
The old drivers were released under the GPL iirc, definately one allowing free redistribution, and thus are not illegal to share. Linuxant just doesnt want to provide them any more to lock people in to their new cash cow... oh and coz the old 'buggy' ones might give them a bad reputation...
Edit: Ok I've dug up a saved copy of some download licence agreement page before the download urls, and I'm certain you could get driver packages which were source that compiled for your kernels.

Slackware has a Prog that enables one to use RPM packages.........rpm2tgz!!!
1. change directory to where you downloaded it
2. open the terminal and type 'tar xfvz hsfversion.tar.gz' (no quotes)
3. type 'cd hsfversion' to get into the folder
4. type 'make install'
5. if it installs right, type and run 'hsfconfig' to setup the modem
That's all there is to it, just run kppp, or whatever you use and put your ISP info in and dial away! If you get an 'autoconf.h' error like I did on my system, check my site and it tells you how to get the missing file from the kernel.
