no access to ide cdrom drive after configuring a kernel image

hello everyone,
i have recently installed slack11 on a pc with characteristics

core 2 duo,
P965 Northbridge
ICH8R Southbridge
an additional "gigabyte sata controller"
the motherboard a gigabyte GA -965P DQ6, offers 6x SATA2 connections on the ICH8R, and one IDE (for an optical drive), and another 2 SATA2 connections on the gigabyte controller.

i installed slackware 11 using test26.s kernel image, but i didn't have sound, or network, so i recompiled some kernel of my own - 2.6.20.7. now it seems i do not 'see' the cdrom
there is no /dev/hda1 device not a /dev/cdrom link under that path...
but i made sure i include 'support for ATAPI/IDE CDROM drives' from the kernel options....

here is a dump of what i think are relevant parts of the kernel config file (the whole dump couldn't fit)

The problem is that the CD-ROM driver is loading after the sata driver has grabbed the IDE interface. You need to use the sata driver for both the hard drive and the CD-ROM. Try adding "libata.atapi_enabled=1 hdc=noprobe" to the kernel command line with the lilo.conf append option (and remember to reinstall lilo). Remember also to use "hdb=noprobe" instead, if your CD-ROM drive is not the secondary master, but the primary slave.

hm... that doesn't seem to be working...
or at least there appears no /dev/hda/ in my system...
also i added in lilo.conf what wou said with the append command under the image of the kernel i made, but since there is only one IDE port on the motherboard, i take it that by hdc=noprobe you are refering to hda device...
finally say ths works, is it a permanent solution, or is there another way i have to do it... like configure another kernellll...??
thank you in advance for you help

Did you include drivers for it in the IDE section ?

what do you mean?
in kernel config?
i think i have, did you check the config dump i posted?
i compiled into the kernel 'support for IDE/ATAPI CDROMS'.. i dunno what else to do
the think it, with installation image test26.s i used to have the cdrom drive under /dev/hde

so now i am trying to go through the differences between that config file and this one i have now..

there is like 3.3k lines different.. ill try to focus on the ones that got smth to do with device drivers and ATA/IDE/ATAPI/dvd-(cd-)ROMs/ and SATA...

I'm just saying that, because you need specific drivers for it. Ok, I know you enabled 'support for IDE/ATAPI CDROMS', but did you enable the specific drivers that you need for YOUR IDE CD-ROM ?

Here's my .config (it's got lots of stuff enabled, cuz I'm lazy and didn't bother to figure out which driver goes with my DVD/CD drive)

Code:
#
# Please see Documentation/ide.txt for help/info on IDE drives
#
# CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE_SATA is not set
# CONFIG_BLK_DEV_HD_IDE is not set

CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEDMA=y
# CONFIG_IDEDMA_IVB is not set
CONFIG_IDEDMA_AUTO=y
# CONFIG_BLK_DEV_HD is not set
There is a LOT more enabled here.

Also, the kernel compile guide in my sig may help.

ok i found it,
i had to include the following 2 commented options...

# Please see Documentation/ide.txt for help/info on IDE drives
#
# CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE_SATA is not set
# CONFIG_BLK_DEV_HD_IDE is not set

the thing is from make menuconfig
it says for the 2 of them:
-support for sata (deprecated; conficts with libata SATA driver)
-Use old disk only on primary interface..

i obviously hadn't installed them before because they where called 'old' and deprecated..
to tell ou the truth its possible the deprecated option is not needed. but i will not try to recompile a kernel image now the cd works... and the sata drives don't seem to have any problem...
you know of any of the conficts it talks about??

i enabled these 2 simultaneously and reconmpiled the kernel...
and it works ...
thank you for yor help
