Nextcloud client on Slackware?

I'm playing with cloud storage options and I've liked Nextcloud, especially on Centos which lacks the glibc to run Dropbox.

Anyone running the Nextcloud client on Slackware? From SBo, it needs qt5 which looks like a fair amount of work to get going on Slack 14.2. Any tips or cautions?

Nextcloud is a good choice. You can actually use OwnCloud client version 2.3.0 with any nextcloud installation. OwnCloud 2.3.0 is the last version to support compiling against QT4 (You can use Nextcloud of the same version as well). I typically find the build for the NextCloud client more cumbersome than using the OwnCloud client.

To have a fully functional OwnCloud/NextCloud install you may want to compile qtkeychain before OwnCloud/NextCloud. This will provide integration with the Kwallet tools in KDE.

Compiling QT5 from scratch is time consuming. If you want to go the route of the latest NextCloud/Owncloud I strongly suggest upgrading to ktown from Alien bob. This will have the latest KDE desktop and more importantly QT 5.

Are you planning on signing up with a Next/Own Cloud provider or running your own installation?

Interesting idea. Is the encryption and syncing the same? I don't use KDE on this particular system, although I see he has qt5.9.6 as a standalone.

The server is currently on digitalocean.

Using OwnCloud the syncing and encryption is the same. In all actuality the NextCloud client (at least up to version 2.3.0) is an Owncloud client rebranded and a couple of minor code changes. Hence, the NextCloud build has more patches and potential for broken compiles if you try and run a version newer than what is in the Slackbuild repo.

I'm using the nextcloud client together with the qt5 by Alienbob. It works fine, it just fails to retrieve the password from kwallet (if using kde), so you have to run the wallet before in some way. This is how I modified the the launcher

Code:
/usr/bin/kwalletd 2> /dev/null; /usr/bin/nextcloud

Cool, thanks. I'm glad to hear this option is workable. I'm stumped by the password thing though. I don't use KDE and so kwallet isn't an option for me anyway, but saving the password to gnome-keyring would be ideal since that's part of the base install. Did you only test with KDE?

You need to compile and install qtkeychain before compiling next or Own cloud. I forgot qtkeychain will interface with Gnome-keyring or Kwallet. (Make sure to compile qtkeychain against the same QT libraries you are using for you Next/Own cloud client.
