I wrote my own update utility for Slackware in the '90s. It only found updates for already-existing packages. I detected necessary libraries in new packages with a script that runs ldd for every .so in ld.so.conf looking for 'not found's. That doesn't work for non-libraries but it's useful. I still build some of my software too.

Well, if I must . . .

But I've been getting along fine without them. I am keeping an archive of all the packages I install so I can backup and reinstall easily if I need to. I already have needed to once, since I broke my system.

I have been meaning to figure out sbopkg, but I haven't wanted to break away from the other things I am trying to learn to get my computer set up the way I want it. But I will do it.

I don't mind the long way round

Personally I don't mind installing packages and dependencies by hand. I have tried sbopkg and it is very good. However, I think you learn more through the 'long way round'.
