New Install, New Problems, Slackware 10.1

Seems like no matter what you do, every time you install Slackware something is different.
Now, I have a few problems after a fresh Slackware 10.1 install

1. I renamed updatedb.tmp to updatedb so I can actually updatedb. Problem is, it doesn't work as expected, not putting programs in my $PATH globally for root & users. I would like firefox to be added to it which is in /usr/local/bin/firefox. My previous installed updatedb worked flawlessly, how do I go about fixing this problem?

2. I startx from user, and when I need to install a program with a gui-based installer, I need to run from root to have privelages to write to the directories which I prefer to install to. I could do su, but I prefer su -, as it provides true root privelages. My previous install worked fine, how do I fix this?

That's about it... and also, if anybody is running Slackware 10.1 on IBM Thinkpad T42's, please contact me; I am working on a project which will be a place for users to get help with their T42/Slackware installs

Thanks

Sorry, but as far as I know, updatedb doesn't modify Ur PATH. If U want this to happen U should modify /etc/profile.

Can I ask U a question?? Why do U prefer su -?? Do U know what does it means??.
u can fix that by typing:

xhost +

su -
(enter Ur root's passwd here)

export DISPLAY=:0.0

Start Ur Gui-Instaler

When I use "su -", it switches to the root home directory, and doesn't stay in the user home directory.

And how would I edit in /etc/profile so it modifies my PATH?

thanks for the help

The "su -" command loads all the environment variables. and start a real login.

Did the export DISPLAY worked for U??

for the profile U just need to add this at the end

export PATH=$PATH:/MyDirectory

make sure the link to firefox is a soft link
