Network cfg

Hi there,

long time slack user, tho at this point in time you would not think it.

<preamble>
I had a small issue upgrading fluxbox with latest version from some site that shall remain nameless. NExt time I started up X some vulgar error spewed to my console :-( After various attempts to get fluxbox working I had to concede defeat and try re-install(AND WILL ONLY RUN APPS I CAN COMPILE MYSELF! Add in a few 'amens', 'our fathers' to show forgiveness)
</preamble>

Okay...now I have all the details for inet cfg but I see this in /var/log/messages:
eth0 : link is not ready

now I have have updated /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.config and included the gateway , ip, subnetmask. The network is supposed to be DHCP but I have found in the past my IP is consistently assigned.

I have edited /etc/resolve.conf and removed the entry there and added DNS IP.

Now the funny thing(depending on what I have mucked about) I can ping the gateway and the dns, but trying to browse to a site keeps failing.

Please educate me!!

Many thanks for any assistance :-)

have you tried running 'dhcpcd eth0'? That way if your network is running DHCP it should pick it up and use the IP assigned.

will take 'the shot'

C-Sniper actual, will give that a try. Tho IIRC have DHCP set to yes in rc.inet1.conf I would see a msg along the lines of 'No carrier signal'.

tried using the dhcp properties, message display says that it is timing out. I have tried a many permutations, calling ifconfig, and route but I seem to be getting nowhere.
