Problems solved! I downloaded and ran the VirtualBox-5.1.4-110228-Linux_amd64.run from the
http://www.virtualbox.org site (Downloads > Linux hosts > right-click "AMD64" in 'All Distributions'). I did have to set virtualization in the BIOS in order to permit 64bit WIN7 VMs (my problem quoted above). All I had to do was execute the .run file and reboot (to start the /etc/init.d scripts). The virtualbox .run file has the advantage over the SlackBuilds repository in that it is a more recent version, not to mention easier to install!
