That's just a warning, once you type su - mysql and see operation no permitted, take a look at the prompt, it should say mysql@host:~$ that means you're now the mysql user, as that user, you've to run the other commands stated on rc.mysqld. Once you do that, type exit to go back to root.
If you ran the commands as root instead of mysql, there's a easy way to fix it, it's also explained in rc.mysqld.
