addicted to Slackware. I've been playing with Ubuntu for a week but there's something compelling me to reinstall Slackware, am i addicted, and am I alone in this?

No Simon, you are not alone. There is something about Slackware.

Maybe it's the fact that it is really up-to-date or that it is a complete distro with traditional tools, so if someone sends you a TeX file you can handle it. Or it could be the deep sense of knowing that comes when you really begin to understand how things work. Or the challenge when they don't. Or that it's the consistent vision of one man with the help of many.

I think we all come back to Slackware some day.

My name is Joel, and I am addicted to Slackware. It just sort of
happens to you. I thought "I'll install Slackware on an extra
partition just to try it out. No big deal, no commitment." Then I
couldn't stop. I set up a Slackware system at work; I converted my
home computer. I tried to install Gentoo, but it just didn't feel
right. I thought about installing FreeBSD, but i thought "What's the point?"

Maybe it was the working packages of Enlightenment DR17, maybe it was
that it felt like Unix; maybe it was the speed of compilation. I
don't know what it was.

My descent into Slackware addiction began in September, 2004, when I bought Linux Format magazine with 2 CD's - Slackware 10 - stuck on the front. I'd only actually had a computer for about a year then, messed about a bit with DJGPP & Cygwin, then got a Knoppix CD, so I was already fascinated by what GNU/Linux had to offer. I'd read all the cautionary stuff about resizing and dual-booting, but that didn't put me off. There were brief installation instructions in the mag, and I didn't have any difficulty with it. Proving just how easy it is to succumb to these addictions. Then I got a better specified computer (the present one), used only XP Pro for a bit, but then started dual-booted distro-hopping, but always coming back to Slack, 11 then 12. Must be some hidden software that broadcasts subliminal messages: "Install me...Install me...Resistance is futile."
