Mousewheel scroll desktops in (Dropline) GNOME

In Fluxbox and XFCE this is one of the coolest and most useful features, is there any way to do this in GNOME? Even knowing what to search for would be helpful (searching for anything involving "mousewheel" gives me millions of "how do I make my scrollwheel work?" threads).

have you modified your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to include the lines:

"Buttons" "5"
"ZAxisMapping" "4 5"?

under the mouse section?

this is mine....

Section "InputDevice"

# Identifier and driver

Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
Option "Buttons" "5"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

# Mouse-speed setting for PS/2 mouse.

# Option "Resolution" "256"

That's not what I mean, I already have my wheel working, I just want to be able to cycle through the desktops by scrolling the wheel over the background like in Fluxbox.

You can do that somewhat. Just use the mousewheel and scroll while you are over the "Workspace Switcher". (The thing in the bottom right with the 4 desktops)

I ultimately think scrolling while you are just on the desktop i a crappy system, since i accidentally use the scroll wheel all the time, and i would hate to switch my desktop accidentally every 3 minutes. I think Gnome has a more sane default.

Just to put a stop to the search, without serious modification I don't think there's any way to get Gnome to do what you're wanting it to do.

As an aside, until just then I didn't know the mousewheel would do that over the workspace switcher. Nifty!
