I tried to select "Microsoft" as my mouse type (As the Slackware HOWTO suggests. It even has an option to enable if you have a logitech mouse) but my mouse would act really odd then (Kind of fly up to the top of the screen and act like I'm right clicking)

Really bugs me not having my mouse wheel. And it'd be even nicer to have my extra mouse buttons, but that might be hoping too much.
There's a ton of posts in this forum about how to enable mousewheel up/down directions and click function, as a third button.

Little hint, a wheel mouse with a "clickable" wheel got number "5" Buttons ; consider the wheel movement as the Z axis of your mouse...

for more help go to:
xfree.org

and read:

$man xf86cfg
$man XF86Config
$man XFree86

Enjoy.
