mounted my camera but can't see pictures

Hi everyone,

I was able to mount my crapy-little-came-with-uncle's-pc-for-free digital camera using
mount -t usbfs /dev/sda1 /mnt/camera.

When I go to /mnt/camera directory I see 5 directories: 001,002,003,004,005. I think I made about 5 pics with the camera. But when I look inside the dirs, it's kinda like the Russian Doll thing: each of them has files named 001, 002, etc.
When I try to look at these with xv (hoping they are pics), I see a jumbled up text file (obviously a binary).

Can someone tell what is going on?

The camera probably uses a different filesystem, probably fat32. Try mounting it like "mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/camera" without specifying the filesystem, and then if it fails mount it again with vfat as the filesystem.

Then, if it still does not work, chances are you cannot mount that camera, and you will need to use a program like gtkam.

I tried vfat, msdos and usbfs is the only one that mounts.

usbfs mounts always. It's FS listing usb devices in some strange manner.

Try out GTKAM. (OR Google's Picasa, which looks rather nice)

So let me clarify this: If I can't mount it using

mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/camera (or using msdos type)

and if it is not a supported camera in gphoto2 then I am out of options. Correct?

Just a thought, but my camera (Sony Cybershot DSC-W7) has three connection modes; usb, ptp, and (I think) pictbridge. Anyway, I had to change the setting to get it to be recognized by gphoto (from usb to pictbridge). I can mount it like you are trying to by selecting the usb option.

In other words, check the settings on the camera itself; it might help.

Or then again, maybe not...
