microsoft sites (teams, office 365) in slackware's browsers firefox, chromium
Dear list,
recently I have been struggling to be able to log into Microsoft services such as
Teams, Office365 (yes, unfortunately, I have to). I access the services through
www browsers. While on Windows I can generally log in, the situation on my
slackware 15.0 is much worse, I am unable to log in in either firefox or chromium.
The sites most often just 'don't do anything'. [Funnily, on OpenBSD, chromium
(called chrome there) works, while firefox works only partially, eg, it shows
no chat messages in the Teams application; but, in general, on OpenBSD, I can
at least login in the services.]
If anybody has a clue as to what could be the problem with my slackware, I'd be
grateful. (I tried cleaning caches, running in 'private' windows, to no avail.)
Some people mentioned that the problem may be caused by some outdated (?)
ssl certificates, but I seem to be using the latest 'ca-certificates-20230721-noarch-1_slack15.0' available on slackware 15.0.
Perhaps you are missing something after all? Are you running the real full Slackware? I have no issues on my Slackware 15.0 (64bit) computer logging into for instance https://onedrive.live.com/ and accessing my files.
I am using Alien BOB's Chromium package (no, Chrome is not the same as Chromium!) version 118.0.5993.88.

As far as I can tell, I have full Slackware 15.0 (64bit).
On Slackware I also use Alien Bob' chromium
118.0.5993.88 (Official Build) (64-bit).
(And I am aware that chromium and chrome are not the same; just on OpenBSD,
as I said, the executable that runs chromium is called 'chrome'. I do
not know why, but it is of no importance here...)
- do you use https (or http)?
- does it work with/without a vpn?
It's https, it's without any vpn, it is so even if you run without all extensions
in firefox (in the troubleshooter mode, and with Enhanced Tracking Protection OFF)
I have no problem using Office365 from Slackware 15. Very strange problem.
My advice is to open the browser dev tools and try to sieve through the noise for something unusual.
Is Firefox being used in Windows? Is Windows being used in a dual boot computer or from a different computer? If using different computers are both computers going through the same equipment (same router, same ISP device, etc.)?
Verify DNS servers. Check /etc/hosts file and /etc/resolv.conf for stale IP addresses.

Running Slackware 15.0 KDE with a full install - I have used brave and librewolf to access office.com with no issues once I whitelisted office.com for the cookies in the browser. I use Outlook and Teams for work.
FWIW, I'm using Slackware64-15.0 and have full web functionality on office.com, using Brave and Vivaldi (both chromium based). With Firefox everything worked i.e Excel,Word, Outlook EXCEPT for Teams. I didn't spend any time trying to figure out why.
Not sure if you've already tried this but have you tried disabling "enhanced tracking protection" in Firefox or make sure "protection settings" is set to "standard", perhaps, it is set (or got reset) to something else. Perhaps, some of your security settings are blocking normal functionality.
I almost never use Firefox. My main broswers are Brave and Vivaldi. It's probably worth trying these out, since Microsoft Edge itself is also a chromimum based browser and these don't have any problems as far as I can tell.

They are two different computers, one Windows, one Linux, connecting through the same equipment (home wifi).
There's nothing strange to me in either /etc/hosts or /etc/resolv.conf.
I had something similar happen while I was troubleshooting a issue with a customers Outlook account
Clearing my cache (history) resolved the issue.
Yes, I heard and tried clearing the cache. No help.
I also ran using a private windows in both chromium and firefox.
I also tried creating a new user, run browsers, but with the same outcome.

I did try disabling "enhanced tracking protection".
I installed the brave-browser.
I reinstalled the ca-certificates.
All the same, in any browser, I try to connect to 'office 365 login' page,
or teams.microsoft.com, but I get nothing shown, the tab title says 'cheching credentials',
and after some longer time (~a minute) I get various errors, ranging (afair) from 'unable to establish
ssl connection' to 'oops, something went wrong, try again'.
