microsoft optical mouse problem

i'm having problems getting my mouse wheel to work I already searched.

heres what my setup looks like

Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "Auto"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "Buttons" "5"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

if I set the protocol to that imps/2 my mouse goes crazy and is unuseable.

i'm running slackware 9.0 kde 3.1.0

when I set my mouse to dev/mouse x crashed saying no mouse present. I think the problem is that it's on "auto" but I don't know how to figure out what port the mouse is on.
