make oldconfig?

i did a clean install of Slackware-11 in an extra disk partition (for testing purposes) and downloaded kernel version 2.4.34 and ran make oldconfig because i did not see a need to change anything from Pat V.'s build, it compiled good so i copy bzImage & System.map over to /boot and edited lilo.conf and ran /sbin/lilo ... but when i rebooted i noticed some problems with the ext3 journal and it had to be read as ext2...

anyone get 2.4.34 built properly on Slackware-11 can give me some advise?...

thanks

Everything seems fine, if your file system is not included in the kernel you may need and initrd, read /boot/README.initrd.
You did make modules && make modules_install after compiling right? Another thing that comes to mind is checking /etc/rc.d/rc.modules (fix symlink maybe).
It may help having all kernel-* packages too.
Hope you solve it.

i will poke around in /etc/rc.d and see what i can find, the symlink pointing to rc.modules-2.4.33 should still work with this newer kernel but i will investigate anyway...

after searching around i find that /lib/modules/2.4.34 is (strangely) almost empty, i believe the 2.4.34 kernel source is the problem, what is odd is i downloaded the kernel source from http://kernel.org/

i am not done investigating this...

anyone else have a similar problem???

i used make oldconfig because i thought Pat V. did a good job building the stock 2.4.33.3 kernel and did not see a need to change anything,

now i wonder if what was once built as modules will need to be built in the kernel itself?

i rebuilt it a second time and it worked, the only thing i did different was i did not run make oldconfig and used make xconfig to load the stock config file (in a GUI) and saved it and killed X to finish building in CLI...

but it was definitely the building of the modules that was the problem because /lib/modules/2.4.34 has lots more files in it now...

sounds weird but it worked...
