login looping

I have a slackware 10.1 system that has been working for about six months.

Recently, I have encountered a repeating login prompt.
I have tried root and normal users. Both do the same thing. It appears that the login worked, since I get the output from fortune, but the login prompt is displayed again immediately after that.

I have attempted to login through ssh and get the same thing except the last line is "server closed session" instead of a login prompt being displayed again. ssh logins were also working fine before.

Also, I tried an ftp login, but that failed with a 550 error... hmmm maybe it was 530. It was certainly unsuccessful. That also was working before.

Any ideas on this?

I can boot up with the cd and mount the partitions, but I don't know what to fix.

thanks

If you get to see the fortune that most likely means that
you somehow got a logout or exit into your ~/.bash_login
, ~/.bash_profile, /etc/profile or one of the scripts in /etc/profile.d ...

Bravo Tink,

Twas the qt.sh script at fault. I removed qt completely, reinstalled it and voila. Sure is nice to be able to log into my system again.

thanks again.
