location of default console keymap

Hi all, I avoid capslock like the plague and use "ctrl:nocaps" when in X, and would like to have the same behaviour in the console. Back when I was using Debian I got it set up the way I want, but now I can't seem to locate the default keymap. I tried editing

Code:
/usr/share/kbd/keymaps/i386/qwerty/defkeymap.map.gz
and it works when I use loadkeys manually, but not on boot.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

If you can do it manually, you can also do it in /etc/rc.d/rc.local

Thanks, I may do that for now. But I would also like to know where the default map is, if anyone knows.

The default used by the console is built into the kernel and can be found at /usr/src/linux/drivers/char/defkeymap.map.

If you want to use a keyboard mapping other than the console default then either create a custom map or use one of the supplied ones. Then load the map at boot by making /etc/rc/d/rc.keymap executable and adding the keymap to it. This is called by the startup script /etc/rc.d/rc.M and is the Slackware standard way of loading a keyboard map.

If you want to have a custom mapping that is loaded without using loadkeys you will have to change the default one mentioned above that is built into the kernel and compile your own kernel. This seems like hard work when you may just set it via loadkeys as above.
