T3slider,

Thanks for your comments. I had simply copied the config file from 2.6.24-5 to the new kernel I built. I do seem to recall seeing ALSA as a module, but on this running kernel the snd-hda-intel (as well as all the other modules) are loaded:

Quote:
snd 50852 15 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_seq_device,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_hwd ep
Everything looks like sound should be working, i.e. volume controls work (though I hear no sound), and there are no error messages when I try to play a sound, from a CD etc. But, curiously, when I ran the command that Bruce has shown:

Quote:
bob@bob-laptop:~$ speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -t wav

speaker-test 1.0.15

Playback device is plug:front
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
WAV file(s)
Playback open error: -16,Device or resource busy
Playback open error: -16,Device or resource busy
Playback open error: -16,Device or resource busy
Playback open error: -16,Device or resource busy
Playback open error: -16,Device or resource busy
Everything else about this kernel is PERFECT. This laptop runs smoother and cooler, and boot time is about 30 per cent faster. Also curiously, I do not get the boot message:

Quote:
Triggering udev events: retry=failed
(not the exact message)

which used to hang my boot-up for a good 40 seconds. I am assuming that was ndiswrapper which I now no longer have to use.

Bruce:

I have decided to try this kernel for a week or two and see if all goes OK. I had just thought it was bad practice to use a non-released kernel as your primary.

Solved

Well, every now and then I am pleasantly surprised when something that didn't work suddenly does. I have no idea why, as I have done nothing to deal with the no sound problem with this kernel, but I just opened a second browser window and, Viola! Sound! It just mysteriously started working with no input from me.

Oh well, mysteries abound!

Bob
