kppp in Slackware 13.37

I know I'm behind the times, as I'm just getting around to installing Slackware 13.37. I use dial-up internet access, and I've used kppp in the past without problems. However, in 13.37, kppp has a tendency to freeze. I've installed it on two computers, one using 32-bit CDs and one using a 64-bit DVD, but it happens on both. It appears kppp keeps working if I'm logged on, but I can't do anything with it once the UI freezes. Sometimes even the icon in the toolbar (I use Fluxbox) disappears. Sometimes kppp freezes while I'm configuring it, or checking my configuration, and I can't affect it any further. My only recourses are to "kill -9 kppp" or use xkill.

My two PCs also use two different external modems, and one of them I've never used before, so it's possible it's faulty. (I bought it used.) But kppp froze when I was just querying that modem to set it up, so it appears to not be a problem with that modem. Perhaps it's something with external modems.

Has anyone else seen this behavior, and/or have a work-around or fix?

...yeah,..
I've had KPPP freeze on me in 13.37. But it's usually only been the time I initially was setting up my dialup provider info. After I "killed" it, and went back into it, it seemed fine. I figured it was a glitch with KPPP itself.
