kernel_conf

I've compiled kernel 2.6.19 on my system, I installed it boots, but I have some problems.
When is booting int text mode is has a wired rezolution and when I enter X11, doing what ever, when I press ctrl+alt+backspace my monitor is shuting down, and another problem is that the sound card is reconized but I don't hear any sound, the xmms is playing but I don't hear anything.

Is there any other commnads to find out more about my sistem, beside lspci?
thx

First...did you start with the .config file from your old kernel?

Second...When I ran slack, every time I recompiled my own kernel, when it was done, I had to reinstall all the alsa stuff and run alsaconf to get sound working again.

Only if you do not use alsa from the kernel. I never recompile alsa, because kernel is giving me everything.

It is best to configure the kernel before compiling.

For your monitor
xconf<tab> (there is a command for automatic configuration) ...that is unless something is broken

About the strange boot resolution issue...

Are you by chance using an NVidia card? If so, and you use the proprietary driver from NVidia, I'd recommend removing nvidia based stuff from your kernel, as it can interact in strange ways. Notably, the nvidia framebuffer support was what I had to remove to keep the bootup/console from displaying in odd resolutions (which it would do even if I had normal mode selected in lilo). When I compiled 2.6.17.13 I also had to remove some other nvidia settings in Device Drivers/Character devices to keep x from booting up to a blank screen. It was running just fine but I couldn't see it at all

Hope that helps some,
Tim
