hi =)
i did the following to compile a new kernel (2.4.21)...
make mrproper
copied the config file from the scsi2.s kernel to /usr/src/linux/.config
make menuconfig
make dep
make clean
make bzImage
make modules
copied the bzimage and System map manually (make install doesn't work at all, I see the kernel 2.4.21 message at the login prompt, but uname -r shows 2.4.20)
make modules_install however seems to mess up my system...does anybody know how to get them install without make modules_install ?
sorry... I lost the bookmark where this was explained
Odd ... did you set the symlinks for
the source-trees properly?
linux@ -> linux-2.4.21
linux-2.4.20
linux-2.4.21
Also, if the Makefile for the
2.4.21 kernel is the right one you
should get distinct subdirectories in
/lib/modules ...
/lib/modules/2.4.20
/lib/modules/2.4.21
I don't have the 2.4.20 source installed...yes the symlinks ok...
I got (almost) everything working by now...
the only problem I'm having now is that the network is messed up somehow...
which I don't understand...
I did a fresh install...used scsi2.s...network and internet connection worked fine...
then I installed the 2.4.21 sources...used the config from scsi2.s... added smp and highmem support and compiled the driver for the network card in the kernel instead of compiling it as a module (eepro100) and left everything else the way it was...
then commented the eepro100.o from the rc.network out and did a restart (after running lilo of course)...
the network card gets detected, eth0 is up but i can only connect to localhost...even after setting up the network again...
guess I'm either too stupid or did something wrong...anyway...I don't understand this =(
