I have come to some problems after upgradeing my kernel to 2.6.15.1/3. Ever since I upgraded my externel usb burner will not get assigned a drive letter. Did i miss something in the kernel? It used to work on the device sr0. As I side not all other external devices work like my psp.
usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5
scsi4 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
usb-storage: device found at 5
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
Vendor: PLEXTOR Model: DVDR PX-716A Rev: 1.09
Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 00
usb-storage: device scan complete
I have exactly the same problem. Kernel 2.6.15.4 here. My external usb burner used to be assigned to device sr0. Using "dmesg" and "lsusb" I can see that the kernel recognized the burner fine, but no device is created. I have even tried to make some custum rules for udev specifically for this burner, but no luck at all.
I solved my problem. I simply forgot to compile support for SCSI CDROM DISK in the kernel. As module it is called sr_mod. Once I loaded it up, my external dvd burner was assigned device sr0.
