KDE4 and xfce4 - conflicting settings (mouse and keyboard, maybe more)

I set Swedish keyboard and left-hand mouse in KDE. When I started xfce, I had to set these settings again, which was fine with me. BUT, when I returned to KDE, the mouse was right-hand again! And, the Swedish keyboard was not longer selected at startup (even though it is still above the us keyboard in the localization settings in KDE which means that it should be the default one, at least it worked this way before I entered xfce). I had to set the mouse to be right-hand in order for it to be left-hand. That is, something strange/buggy is happening.

Hello,

It's strongly suggested to set up your keyboard using HAL fdi policy as said in CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT:

Quote:
If you need to use a non-US keyboard layout, then copy the file located at
/usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/10-keymap.fdi to /etc/hal/fdi/policy
and edit it to suit your needs. Have a look at the contents of that file
for an example and more information. If you prefer to do this the "old" way
using /etc/X11/xorg.conf, then you can use "X -configure" or "xorgsetup" to
generate an xorg.conf, then add the following lines to the "ServerFlags"
section to disable input device hotplugging via HAL:
Option "AllowEmptyInput" "false"
Option "AutoAddDevices" "false"
Option "AutoEnableDevices" "false"
This is also relevant if you prefer to disable HAL completely for whatever
reason.
Did you use that method? If not give it a try.

Yeah, I might give it a try. In that case, should I avoid touching the keyboard settings at all in KDE and Xfce?

Any suggestions about the mouse problem? That must clearly be a bug, mustn't it?

It could also be an issue with HAL that detects your mouse and use default settings. I can see two options:

- Find the setting for "left-hand" mouse in /etc/xorg.conf. However I'm not sure this will be honored (again due to HAL).

- Disable input device hotplugging via HAL by putting the options in /etc/xorg.conf as mentioned in file CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT.
