I haven't any from the cashew, virtual desktops, etc. Because I've disabled that type by deselecting them in System Settings==>Workspace Appearance and Behaviour==>Workspace Behaviour==>Workspace==>Show Informational Tips.
BUT, it's NOT THOSE we bothered about. It's these we can't get rid of, an example from KWrite, in the snapshot:

Must be GTK then? They don't really bother me, I can ignore them, but they do seem pointless.

I reckon I have never hovered over something long enough to see that. Or, if I did, I never paid attention to it. Son-of-a-gun.

They actually have to do with GTK+ or Qt (depending on what toolkit your app uses).

That's why I was suggesting looking at the Qt source code, not in KDE settings.

I'm using the Oxygen-GTK theme with KDE 4.6.3, both from Alien Bob.
Quote:
Oxygen-Gtk is a port of the KDE widget theme Oxygen, to gtk.
It's primary goal is to ensure visual consistency between gtk and
qt-based applications running under kde. A secondary objective is
to also have a stand-alone nice looking gtk theme that would behave
well on other Desktop Environments.
Unlike other attempts made to port the kde oxygen theme to gtk, this
attempt does not depend on Qt.
So are the tooltips Qt's or GTK's fault?

This isn't all about GTK+.

Kwrite (and all the other KDE apps) don't use GTK+. They use Qt. Firefox does use GTK+, though.

I actually wonder if the theme can control whether tooltips show up. Qt themes can significantly change the behavior of widgets, so it might be possible.

Anyway, they're driving Woodsman crazy, not me. I was crazy long before I saw a tooltip.

I never provided any screen shots of the problematic tooltips:

Learning KDE4 - Part 5

Notice how the tooltips provide no value and only repeat the underlying text. In the Dolphin shot I have the mouse hovering the date column. In Amarok over the Visible Sources button.

Yes, those are the hard-coded Qt tooltips, for sure.

I use K-Menu entries to start my various VirtualBox virtual machines. Today I opened the VBox configuration tool. I saw those tooltip popups everywhere there too. I had forgotten about them. I recall once upon a time looking for a related qt4 configuration ($HOME/.config/Trolltech.conf) option.
