I'm not a sys-admin, messing about on my computer is just my number one hobby. I jumped in the deep end - my first dual-boot, my first experience with a linux distro, was with Slackware 10 in 2005. I wasn't aware of Slackware's "difficult" reputation then, and don't believe it deserves it now.
