Instant Messaging Problems with KDE

After installing KDE straight from the Slackware 10.2 Distro, it seems to me that every yahoo account I set up on Gaim or Kopete, it wont connect at all. It remains with the message "Connecting ..." and remains so for hours. Is there a solution to this problem?

what version of gaim?
which port are you connecting with?
have you tried changing the port?
are you behind a firewall/router?
have you read the faq on the gaim site?
