Installing X.org from source...

im new to slackware, ive only used redhat before so it could be said that i dont know that much about redhat...im not afraid to admitt it

i installed a pretty bare install of slack with no X, gnome, kde, games. about all it has is development and basic linux apps. i upgraded to the 2.6 kernel which is working but im still working on getting certain things to work, but the essentials such as networking and basic display drivers are working.

i download the source files for x.org from their site, uncompressed them and tried to do a 'make World' to install but it errors out and i have no idea how to fix it.

does anybody know of any specific way that it needs to be installed or a website that explains it better than the documentation that comes with x.org?

I have never built X.org from source, but your best bet would be to just install X.org from the slackware cd. Just mount the cd and browse through it till you find it (I am not sure what series it would be under). Another option would be to get swaret/slapt-get/slackpkg. These three programs all accomplish the same thing, download and install the latest slackware packages from a slackware mirror.

Hi,
I did a full install of Slackware 10 and downloaded the source from X.org 6.8.1.
I did a make World last night and had no problems. So perhaps, you are missing a
package.

X.org is in a super secret hidden directory on the Slackware CD...

It's in the /x directory.

when you say "full" install of slack 10, did you install X? my setup doesnt have X, that might be the reason why it worked for you. im going to try just installing the version thats on the slackware cd, but i really wanted to have the latest version of X.

it would be helpful if you could tell us what the error message is that you get. You're probably just missing a package and the message should indicate which.
